We sat down with Sally, the owner of Don Gays, to learn more about their journey, their proudest moments, and what inspires their beautiful blooms.
How did Don Gays start, and what inspires you?
Don Gays began 45 years ago. Before that, Mr. Gay owned a fruit and veg shop. My mum started working for him when I was 10 years old, and she’s my biggest inspiration. She went to flower arranging classes, began buying flowers, and started entering competitions outside the business. Mr. Gay noticed her natural talent for flower arranging, and that’s how the shop transitioned into floristry.
I’ve been part of the business since I was 12, working as a Saturday girl. I’m still here now, and my son, daughter, and mother-in-law all work here too. We’re a tight-knit team, and we truly love what we do.
Are there any projects you’re particularly proud of?
We’ve done lots of work we’re proud of, but our proudest moment was receiving a phone call to provide flowers for a very important lady. We were fortunate enough to create arrangements for the late Queen Elizabeth. We’ve also done flowers for Princess Anne and the Countess of Essex. It was such an honour to be part of those moments!
What’s the most rewarding part of your work?
Customer satisfaction. Seeing our customers return to us time and time again, and knowing they leave with a smile, is incredibly rewarding.
Are there any floral trends you’re loving right now?
At the moment, we’re focused on our Christmas wreath workshops. We have 300 ladies attending over eight nights, and it’s something we really enjoy. We hope everyone has a wonderful time and a very happy Christmas!
