Grower Spotlight: W.F. Leenen

As the narcissus season moves into full swing, we are pleased to shine a light on one of our preferred growers, W.F. Leenen.

Based in the Netherlands, W.F. Leenen are widely recognised as specialists in the cultivation of high quality cut narcissus. Combining generations of knowledge with a careful, considered approach to growing, they produce flowers that are both beautiful and dependable.

W.F. Leenen are involved at every stage of the process, from breeding and selecting new varieties through to producing consistently strong, well balanced stems. This deep understanding of the crop allows them to focus not only on appearance, but also on performance, vase life and reliability, all qualities that matter when flowers are heading straight into professional use.

History

Founded in 1954 in the bulb growing region of Holland, W.F. Leenen are now third generation growers. The business is currently managed by Jaco and Dirk Leenen, who continue to build on decades of specialist knowledge.

From the beginning, the company has invested time and expertise into developing a respected breeding programme for narcissi, daffodils and Sonatini, alongside maintaining traditional planting and harvesting methods.

Breeding Programme

Breeding remains central to their work. By carefully selecting and developing new varieties, W.F. Leenen ensure strong stems, clean lines and consistent performance throughout the season.

This focus on quality and reliability gives florists confidence, particularly during busy trading periods when consistency is essential.

Harvesting and Planting

What truly sets W.F. Leenen apart is their hands on approach.

Bulbs are carefully selected and planted by hand in a shell based growing medium within wooden crates. These crates are stacked to optimise greenhouse space. Once the plants reach the appropriate stage of growth, the crates are laid flat to continue developing in carefully controlled conditions.

Harvesting and packing are carried out by hand, with close attention paid throughout the growing cycle. Machinery use is kept to a minimum wherever possible. This thoughtful approach supports flower quality while also allowing for more considered, environmentally responsible growing practices.

Their flowers are GLOBALG.A.P. certified, providing additional reassurance around standards and traceability.

Varieties

W.F. Leenen grow over 20 varieties of daffodils and three varieties of Sonatini, offering a broad and carefully curated seasonal selection for professional florists.
